Acaicate made a performance in honor of the tomato tradition of the municipality in the framework of FEAGA.
The City Council of Tuineje wanted to pay a well-deserved tribute to the women who were part of the agricultural history of the municipality, especially those who dedicated their lives to the cultivation and packaging of tomatoes, with a performance by the cultural group Acaicate that took place yesterday afternoon at the stand of the municipality within the framework of FEAGA 2025.
The staging recreated the hard years of the tomato harvest, an activity that since the early twentieth century became one of the economic pillars of the south of Fuerteventura. Women from different parts of the island and even others like Tenerife and Gran Canaria, came to Gran Tarajal to work in the crops, sharing experiences marked by the effort, resilience and a deep sorority.
The councilman for the Primary Sector, Jonathan Peña, emphasized that “we wanted to pay tribute to those anonymous women who, with their hands and their sacrifice, promoted the development of our municipality. To remember them is also to recognize the value of our roots and the work in the countryside, which continues to be an essential part of our identity”.
For her part, the mayor of Tuineje, Candelaria Umpiérrez, highlighted the emotional value of the event and the importance of rescuing the collective memory: “These women were not only tireless workers, but also pillars of the family and community economy. This representation is not only a tribute, it is an act of justice with our history and with those who made it possible”.
