The project grew out of a meeting between friends with shared musical interests and a wish to shape and share some of their own compositions.

The proposal starts out, in principle, from the timple and a personal perspective, but is built up collectively. The recording features Gabriel Rodríguez on flute, Adán Moreno on guitar, Fernando Angulo on drums, Ayla Rodríguez on vocals and Pedro Ageno on timple. For this live performance we are joined by Marta Rosa on percussion, adding to the musical encounter and dialogue that defines Molinos de Paso.

The project’s name comes from an image bound up with the memory of the islands: the old windmills of the Canaries, tools that for years were essential for grinding grain and making gofio, and which today remain as traces of other times.

This image also serves as a metaphor for the project itself. The windmills had a specific function for a set period; afterwards they fell out of use, although their mark remains. Something similar, or much the same, happens with people, stages and pieces of music, which pass through certain moments, serve a purpose and, over time, transform or fade. In the same way, a composition is not necessarily the same each time it is played again. It can change depending on the musicians, the moment or the way it is performed. Molinos de Paso speaks of that passage: of what happens, transforms or also leaves its mark. Musically, the project moves within an open territory where music

rooted in tradition and elements linked to jazz coexist. The latter plays a major role in the way the performance is understood: a space where the written can engage in dialogue with the spontaneous. The compositions are built on defined melodies and structures, but always leave room for improvisation.

For this presentation, the five tracks that make up the original work are expanded with new pieces chosen in dialogue with that same musical and poetic universe. Some are instrumental and others include vocals, but all are woven into a repertoire that keeps the passage of time as its guiding thread. The idea is to present Molinos de Paso not as something finished, but as music that continues on its journey and can take on new forms with each performance. The repertoire becomes a meeting point for different compositions, musicians and moments, where each piece brings a fresh perspective to the project. Everything is passing through: the places, the people, the music and also the songs themselves as they pass from one pair of hands to another.

Recommended age: all audiences

Price: free ticket with a €5 deposit

Get your ticket here

Molinos de Paso began life as an instrumental piece that, over time, ended up lending its name to a work of five tracks recorded at the Manzanas studios in La Laguna.
