The new poster with the word “Fuerteventura” and the goat sculptures are placed in front of the landscape of Jandía and will be used to promote the island in every souvenir photo.
The crews of ‘Fuerteventura, beautiful by nature’ have used local materials to mimic the stone benches with their environment.
The astronomical viewpoint of Sicasumbre was a pioneer in the observation of the night sky of Fuerteventura and today is one of the most visited places on the island by tourists and residents, both to enjoy the daytime views of the Jandia Peninsula and to contemplate the firmament once night falls. This unique and symbolic place has received an overhaul with the renovation of part of its public facilities through the program of the Cabildo ‘Fuerteventura, beautiful by nature’. Its sign with the word “Fuerteventura” and sculptures of Fuerteventura goats will be a recognizable image in the photos of memories uploaded to social networks.
The president of the Cabildo, Lola Garcia, puts in value the various actions that are developed from ‘Fuerteventura, beautiful by nature’, which beautify and prepare infrastructure in every corner of the island territory.
The Councilor for Works and Machinery, Blas Acosta, recalls that “Sicasumbre was a pioneer on the island and opened our offer as a destination to the stellar spectacle of the night sky” thanks to the Professor of Applied Physics at the University of Alicante, now deceased, Guillermo Bernabéu. “He knew how to see in the night sky of Jandía what the rest of us were looking at without seeing, and from there arose this astronomical viewpoint that 400 people visit every day.”
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through its own means Territorial and Environmental Management and Planning (Gesplan), has executed several minor works in the viewpoint to improve both the functionality and comfort of the space.
Thus, the crews have installed public elements such as benches, litter garbage cans and information signs. The centerpiece of the viewpoint is the new iron sign with the word “Fuerteventura” and sculptures of Fuerteventura goats. This sign and the statues are placed on a stone wall in the area, facing the landscape of Jandía, and will serve to promote the island in every souvenir photo and on social networks.
In addition, the crews of ‘Fuerteventura, beautiful by nature’ made a cleaning sweep in the area, from the parking lot next to the road linking the town of Pájara with La Pared to the astronomical viewpoint itself.
The benches are intended to provide rest areas for users, allowing them to contemplate the landscape in a comfortable environment. The litter garbage cans will encourage care for the natural environment, facilitating waste management. And the replacement of signs will help to better understand the night sky and also to spread the image of Fuerteventura through photographs and videos that are then shared by visitors themselves.
The program ‘Fuerteventura, beautiful by nature’ is a “constant ant work of small actions of proximity that improve our quality of life, our natural environment and our tourist image,” explains Blas Acosta.
The night sky of Sicasumbre
Located in the south of the island of Fuerteventura, about 300 meters above sea level in the municipality of Pájara, the viewpoint of Sicasumbre is an excellent place to observe the sky. With parking area and information panels, also has indications on the location of the constellations of stars, a sundial and another vertical. For the most experienced amateurs, the Sicasumbre viewpoint has the necessary supports so that visitors can install their own telescopes and cameras.
In the early evening hours, a star that stands out in early spring can be seen relatively easily. This is Spike, the main star of the constellation Virgo. Very close to it is the constellation of the Cattleman, with Arthur as the prominent star, while to the right of Virgo is the small constellation of the Raven, characteristic for its diamond or quadrilateral shape.
