The City Council of Puerto del Rosario and the Cattlemen’s Association of the Mancomun “La Puipana” have signed a collaboration agreement to support extensive livestock farming on the coast, a traditional practice that shapes the landscape and identity of the municipality.
The signing ceremony was attended by the Mayor of the capital, David de Vera, the Councilman of Primary Sector and Historical Heritage, David de León, and the Commissioner of the Commonwealth, Antonio Cabrera.
The agreement includes a subsidy of 10,400 euros for the maintenance of communal land and to ensure the feeding of livestock, especially important in the current context of drought.
The mayor, David de Vera, emphasized the strategic importance of this support: “This grant is essential to maintain the livestock activity in our municipality, especially in periods of drought like the current one. In addition to its economic value, we preserve a traditional way of life that is part of our identity as a majorero people”.
For his part, the councilman for the Primary Sector, David de León, emphasized the cultural value of these practices: “The primary sector is a key factor in the development of the sector.Through this agreement we not only support the primary sector, but also protect traditions such as “Las Apañadas”, a unique system of collective grazing that keeps alive the link between our territory, livestock and people. It is a cultural heritage that we must preserve for future generations”.
The agreement contributes to maintaining “Las Apañadas”, a traditional system of collective grazing practiced in the coastal lands of the commonwealth. This centuries-old activity, which includes the grouping, marking and care of livestock, represents an exceptional example of coexistence between economic activity and conservation of the natural environment.
The “Puipana” Association, with seven years of experience, carries out essential work in the sustainable management of pastures and the preservation of the Majorera goat, a native breed in danger of extinction that is a symbol of Canary Island culture.
With this collaboration, Puerto del Rosario reaffirms its commitment to a model of sustainable rural development that harmonizes economic activity with the protection of natural and cultural heritage.
