The Road Service has determined points for immediate installation of the SPM between Tuineje and Toto, between Tiscamanita and Agua de Bueyes and in the area of El Castillo.
Adaptation of the usual metal barriers for two-wheeled vehicle accidents prevents amputations and ejection of injured parties
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, from the Road Service, is installing the Motorcyclist Protection System (SPM), an adaptation of the usual metal barriers on Spanish roads, on roads throughout the island. The action of Roads comes from the request made by the group of motorcyclists.
The island’s president, Lola García, values the work carried out by the Cabildo to maintain the island’s road network in good condition, with actions such as this one to increase safety.
The councilor of the Road Service, Blas Acosta, recalls that “the objective of the Cabildo’s technicians is to ensure a safe and comfortable circulation in the entire road network of Fuerteventura, carrying out constant maintenance of the asphalt, replacing deteriorated traffic signs and incorporating new road safety systems such as the Motorcyclist Protection System”.
The locations chosen for the installation of the SPM are distributed throughout the road network and correspond to points of particular significance for two-wheeled vehicles in the event of an accident. Among others, several sections of roads FV-10, FV-20 and FV-30 have been intervened or an immediate intervention has been planned.
Specifically, the Road Service, after studying the requests of the motorcyclists’ collective, has determined points of immediate installation of the SPM between Tuineje and Toto, between Tiscamanita and Agua de Bueyes and in the area of El Castillo.
The function of the Motorcyclist Protection System is to avoid the risk of direct impact of the motorcyclist against the barrier post, which can cause serious injuries and amputations, and of the motorcyclist being thrown off the road, under the barrier, by the free space between two consecutive posts.
For this purpose, the usual simple barrier is supplemented with a fence or screen of lower stiffness and thickness than the existing metal barrier, attached to it and placed at the bottom. With the SPM, the spans between posts are covered and direct impact against the posts is avoided.
