The Waste Department acquires and implements the first facility of its kind on the island, with the aim of bringing recycling to all corners of the island territory.

The dates and times of this mobile clean point will be available in mid-August.

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through the Department of Waste, will operate this summer a mobile clean point that will bring recycling to the residents of all corners of the island territory. This was announced today by the president of the Cabildo, Lola Garcia, and the island councilor of Waste, Enrique Perez, during the presentation of this traveling facility.

According to Lola García, “on an island with long distances as Fuerteventura, it is essential to bring different services to the population. For this reason, we are launching, for the first time, a mobile point in Fuerteventura, which complements the work carried out from the fixed facilities and thus continue to increase recycling on the island”.

Lola García has highlighted “the increasing public awareness. Last year, more than 9,000 tons of waste were recycled in majorero territory”. “We have gone from being at the tail, to place us in the average of the Canary Islands and at the head of some recyclable fractions such as glass. We have to thank, therefore, the citizenship and their awareness. Without their involvement, none of this would be possible”.

The island councilor, Enrique Perez, indicates that “this percentage will continue to grow with the implementation of the mobile clean point that will operate on an itinerant basis by the different localities of Fuerteventura collecting waste that have no place in the containers that we find in the streets. For the first time, this service will be brought closer to the people of the areas farthest from the fixed points”.

The itinerant mobile point will move around the different localities. Users can check the dates and times in a calendar that, predictably, will be available from mid-August, on the website of the Cabildo (cabildofuer.es) in the area of Waste and social networks ‘Fuerteventura Recicla’. Perez also thanked the Government of the Canary Islands for the financial support received for the implementation of this mobile clean point.

At the same time, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura works hand in hand with the municipalities to have the clean points needed by the municipalities. The Fuerteventura Waste Master Plan contemplates the construction of clean points in Corralejo, Antigua and the municipality of Pájara, for which it is necessary the provision of land by the municipalities. In addition, the Department of Waste is promoting the modification of the selective waste collection contract, in order to have more frequency and containers, so it is expected that this percentage will continue to increase.

Likewise, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura has made an investment of 1.5 million euros, with its own funds, to improve the machinery in the Zurita Environmental Complex and the different transfer plants. In addition, 1.1 million euros of European NextGeneration funds have been obtained by the Island Corporation to adapt the transfer plants to the fifth container.
