The Island Corporation has asked the Ministry of Ecological Transition to “refine” these studies, taking into account the conditions of Fuerteventura as a limited territory.
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has held a meeting with the Government of the Canary Islands to analyze the zoning proposed by the Recovery Plan for the canary houbara bustard(Chlamydotis undulata fuertaventurae), promoted by the Regional Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy of the regional executive.
This working meeting, requested by the Island Corporation, was attended by the president of the Cabildo, Lola García, the Councilor for Territorial Planning, Nereida Calero, as well as the team of the Planning Service and its island director. On behalf of the Government of the Canary Islands, the Director General of Natural Spaces and Biodiversity, Miguel Ángel Morcuende, as well as the head of service and technical staff were present.
The Cabildo requested this working meeting to ask the Government of the Canary Islands to “refine” the studies and delimit in detail those areas where there is a possibility of development of the houbara bustard. In a limited territory such as Fuerteventura, it is important to make protection compatible with the use and enjoyment of the land by the population of the island, since, as the Department of Planning has warned through allegations, this zoning is introduced in rural settlements and areas of scattered buildings, and would also affect the realization of sporting events.
After the aforementioned meeting, both the president of the Cabildo and the island councilor obtained the commitment of the Government of the Canary Islands to study the allegations presented by the Planning Service of the Island Corporation, to check to what extent it is possible that these areas can be made compatible with the different uses of the land, always with care and respect for the environment, in balance with the use and enjoyment of our territory.
