This Saturday, June 1, the Gambuesa de Jarugo was the scene of one of the most emblematic traditions of the primary sector majorero: the apañada, which brought together more than 700 head of cattle for sanitation, marking and subsequent release in the commonwealth of Puerto del Rosario. The activity, organized with the involvement of the Association of Farmers of the Commonwealth of Puerto del Rosario “La Puipana” brought together numerous coastal farmers who, once again, demonstrated their commitment to traditional extensive livestock, one of the pillars of identity of Fuerteventura.
As part of this day, the farmers of the commonwealth of Puerto del Rosario, along with the commissioner Antonio Cabrera, the City Council of Puerto del Rosario and the association itself “La Puipana” paid an emotional recognition to Antonio Curbelo, technician of Agricultural Extension of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, on the occasion of his retirement.
For years, Curbelo has been a key figure in the support and protection of coastal livestock farming, standing out for his closeness, his dedication and his deep knowledge of the territory and the challenges facing this ancestral activity. The tribute highlighted his dedication throughout a professional career marked by a vocation for service and respect for the island’s livestock heritage.
The event was attended by several members of the municipal government group, including Ana Hernandez (Urbanism), Jenifer Perez (Citizen Participation), David de Leon (Primary Sector) and Mayor David de Vera, who wanted to accompany the livestock sector on this significant day.
David de León, councilman of the area, stressed that “the apañadas are not only a livestock activity, it is a living manifestation of our identity. From the City Council we will continue to promote policies that strengthen the primary sector, accompanying our farmers in the defense of a sustainable model that respects the environment.”
For his part, Mayor David de Vera wanted to highlight the strategic and cultural value of coastal livestock: “the traditional extensive livestock farming is part of the soul of Fuerteventura. It speaks of who we are, our history and our bond with the land. Recognize figures like Antonio Curbelo is also recognize the efforts of generations of farmers who have kept alive this activity in the face of adversity. From the City Council of Puerto del Rosario we will continue working to preserve this legacy as part of our natural and cultural heritage.”
The City Council of Puerto del Rosario reiterates its commitment to the primary sector and appreciates the participation and dedication of all those involved in this new edition of the apañada.
