The City Council of La Oliva, through the Department of Education, managed by Omaira Saavedra, is committed to the project ‘Classroom of traditions’, a program that advocates the dissemination of activities of yesteryear typical of the Islands among the students of the municipality. In this sense, the workshops are intended to transcend the informative level, so that the little ones experience in a practical way different traditional tasks such as livestock, fishing, agriculture, music, loom and lateen sailing.
This approach aims to go beyond a simple day in which the way of life of our Canarian ancestors is known superficially. Therefore, we are committed to a comprehensive implementation, in which students, through different sessions throughout the months of April and May, can learn in a more complete way the tasks and activities of the Canarian ancestors.
The mayor of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco, says: “The development of the program allows to strengthen the Canarian identity and sense of belonging while promoting respect for cultural diversity. For two months, children are offered the opportunity to get in touch with native activities of our islands, reminiscent of the values and customs of our people.”
For her part, the Councilor for Education, Omaira Saavedra points out the importance of making available to the students of the municipality this type of workshops: “From the Department we consider it essential to continue promoting activities that remind the Canarian character among the youngest. The workshops go through different areas ranging from our folklore with music and dance to the ancient means of subsistence such as livestock, through even the loom and sport with lateen sailing. This project is born with the illusion that children can experience these activities on several occasions over two months, so that they stay with this learning over the years.”
As a final touch, students will be able to exhibit what they have learned at a fair on May 28, sharing with each other the cultural richness of the Islands.
