A recognition to a lifetime dedicated to research, education and conservation of the Majorero heritage.
The prominent historian Inma de Armas will be the town crier of the Fiestas in Honor of the Virgen de La Peña 2025, one of the most relevant events of the island, noted for its deep religious and cultural tradition.
The president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Lola Garcia, and the Minister of Culture, Rayco Leon, highlight this well-deserved recognition to the extensive and remarkable contribution of historian Inma de Armas to the cultural and historical development of Fuerteventura. An outstanding professional, whose work has left a deep mark in the field of culture, education and heritage conservation.
From her early professional years, between 1982 and 1985, Inma de Armas carried out the cataloguing of the Island Historical Archive and the Municipal Library of Puerto del Rosario, laying the foundations for documentary and bibliographic preservation on the island. In 1985, she coordinated the new project of the Popular University of Fuerteventura, a key initiative for continuing education and cultural outreach to all citizens.
Her educational vocation took her to Lanzarote in 1990, where she worked as a teacher of History of Music at the Secondary School of Haría. In 1991, she returned to Fuerteventura to join the Department of Education and Culture of the Cabildo.
In the early 2000s, she assumed the first joint leadership of the Education, Culture and Sports Service of the Cabildo Insular. Subsequently, with the administrative reorganization, he went on to lead exclusively the Culture Service until 2022, promoting multiple projects and significantly enriching the island’s cultural panorama.
In 1995, he coordinated the opening and start-up of the Casa Museo Miguel de Unamuno, developing its museum project in collaboration with Ignacio Hernández Díaz and Lorenzo Mateo Castañeyra. His research and editorial work has been prolific, highlighting the coordination in 2013 of the book commemorating the 100 years of the constitution of the Island Councils, as well as the co-authorship of the book 100 years in Memory, published by the City Council of Puerto del Rosario on the occasion of the new millennium.
In 2024, as part of the centenary of the arrival of Miguel de Unamuno to Fuerteventura, she was the curator of the exhibition currently on display at the Casa Museo. In parallel, De Armas has done valuable research on Aquilino Fernandez, a leading figure in the gatherings that Unamuno held on the island, a politician of regional relevance with links in both Lanzarote and Fuerteventura during the early decades of the twentieth century.
This tribute recognizes the tireless dedication of Inma de Armas to the culture and history of Fuerteventura, whose work continues to enrich the collective identity of the island.
