Yentel Caers and Sarah-Quita Offringa are crowned champions in a competition that consolidates Pájara as an international reference in nautical sports.

The City Council of Pájara delivered this Sunday, July 27, the awards for the FreeStyle modality of the 37th edition of the Windsurfing and Wingfoil Championship of Fuerteventura, held on the beach of La Barca, which has had the participation of elite athletes from different countries.

In a day marked by optimal weather conditions and a high competitive level, riders Yentel Caers and Sarah-Quita Offringa were proclaimed world champions in their respective categories. In the men’s category, the Belgian athlete was accompanied in second place by the Italian Jacopo Testa and, in third place, by his compatriot Steven Van Broeckhoven.

On the other hand, in the women’s category, Aruba’s Sarah-Quita Offringa was accompanied by the Dutch Maaike Huvermann, in second place, and Lisa Kloster, completing the podium.

The event was attended by prominent authorities of the City Council of Pájara, as well as the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, including the Councillor for Tourism, Marlene Figueroa, and the Councillor for Accessibility, Carmen Alonso. The authorities were in charge of delivering the awards to the athletes and highlighted both the sporting quality of the event and its strategic value for the promotion of the municipality and the island.

The Councilor for Tourism, Tina Da Silva, emphasized the positive impact of this type of event, which qualifies the municipality “as a destination of excellence”. “Beyond the direct impact on hotel occupancy and the local economy, this championship generates an international media projection that very few sporting events manage to achieve,” she said.

The Sports Councilman, José Benito Alonso, valued the quality of the athletes who, in his words, “confirm that this championship is a world reference”. “From the Consistory, we will continue to support professional sports and, at the same time, encourage the practice among our youth,” he added.

For his part, the mayor of Pájara, Alejandro Jorge, stressed the international projection that gives this championship and noted that “reflects our commitment to a model that unites sport, tourism and sustainability. “Sotavento beach is a privileged natural enclave that , thanks to its unique conditions, allows to hold competitions of the highest level and continue to attract thousands of visitors from around the world,” he remarked.

The sports program of the championship will continue this week with the celebration of the Wingfoil modality, a growing discipline that combines speed, technique and skill on the water. The City Council continues to strengthen its support for water sports and consolidating the positioning of the municipality as a venue for sporting events of worldwide projection.
