The INE and the ISTAC indicate that 52,315 people worked in tourism, out of a total of 58,580 employed on the island.

By municipality: 88.3% of the employed population in Antigua, 79.7% in Betancuria, 89.7% in La Oliva, 94.4% in Pájara, 87.9% in Puerto del Rosario and 86.5% in Tuineje.

Marlene Figueroa: “Tourism is not just another economic activity for Fuerteventura but its driving force, the engine that energizes other activities and sustains family economies”.

Data on employed population, the part of the working population that receives a consideration for their work, whether employed or self-employed, in Fuerteventura during the second quarter of 2025 reaffirms the importance of the services sector for the island economy, bringing together 89.2 percent of workers. A positive influence that reaches companies, professionals and families with which it weaves a large economic network.

The Councilor for Tourism of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Marlene Figueroa, explains that “tourism is not just another economic activity for Fuerteventura but its driving force, the engine that powers other activities and sustains family economies”.

Marlene Figueroa delves into the “positive influence” of the service sector on the other economic sectors of Fuerteventura. Beyond the reception of a hotel or a restaurant table, this sector consumes a multitude of goods and services that are partly produced on the island and in all cases are provided by local workers, who in turn have their own demands for goods and services.

“In this type of interconnected economic relationships, that one sector employs more than 89 percent of workers makes this activity a common interest to look out for,” he says.

“Diversifying the economy is a strategic and desirable decision, but it must be done by increasing the weight of other activities and not limiting the power of the engine that pulls the economy, from the island to the family economy,” adds Marlene Figueroa.

ISTAC and INE data April-June 2025

The Canary Islands Statistics Institute (ISTAC) and the National Statistics Institute (INE) show in their data corresponding to the second quarter of 2025 that the employed population in Fuerteventura was 58,580 people.
