The Island Corporation continues to develop initiatives to recognize, value and strengthen the importance of the island’s traditional culture.
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through the Crafts Department, directed by Lolina Negrín, has delivered palm leaves to local craftsmen and craftswomen with the aim of preserving traditional crafts at risk of disappearing, such as palm and organ basketry.
This type of trade faces serious obstacles, such as the advanced age of the people involved and, especially, the adoption by the competent authorities of phytosanitary measures for the eradication and control of the pests that affect palm trees in the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands.
Therefore, taking into account the importance of maintaining the necessary control measures in the handling of raw material and the need for it so that artisans can develop their craft, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura has carried out the pruning of palm trees grown in the Experimental Farm of Pozo Negro, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, for the delivery of the resulting material to craftsmen and craftswomen.
This initiative has been promoted by Lolina Negrín, the island’s crafts councilor, with the aim of providing the island’s craftsmen and craftswomen with the necessary supply of palm leaves to carry out their activities.
