These interventions are proposed by the Department of Tourism and are supported by the Next Generation EU Funds.

Lola García: “It is important to promote actions to recover the Majorero agricultural landscape, focusing on traditional systems such as gavias, which are part of our identity as Majorero people”.

Marlene Figueroa: “There are landscapes that define our island and therefore are part of our identity heritage; La Oliva hosts several examples that define and project us in the eyes of the visitor”.

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through the program ‘Fuerte por Naturaleza’ of the Department of Tourism, advances and initiates a new area of action, the sustainable rehabilitation of the Protected Natural Landscape of Valle Grande, after the successful completion of the intervention in Vallebrón, both in the municipality of La Oliva and with the support of the Next Generation EU Funds.

According to the president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Lola Garcia, “both actions are part of the line of work of the Island Corporation to protect our territory and our landscape. In this case, with actions to recover the original state of the agricultural landscape of the area and traditional agricultural systems such as gavias, which are part of our identity as ethnographic elements and for the use of water in Fuerteventura”.

The Councillor for Tourism, Marlene Figueroa, explains that “there are landscapes that define our island and therefore are part of our heritage identity, are an emblem of Fuerteventura and the way of being majoreros and majoreras”.

Figueroa adds that “in the municipality of La Oliva we have several very important examples that define us as majoreros and that also project us with a certain way of being and feeling in the eyes of the visitor”.

The previous action of rehabilitation of the Vallebrón Protected Natural Landscape, also included in the Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destination ‘Fuerte by Nature’ financed with Next Generation EU Funds, facilitated the objective of transforming the tourist destination through the optimization and integration of all the tourist resources of Fuerteventura, relying on new technologies and ensuring the social, environmental and economic sustainability of the island.

New area: Valle Grande

Now, the sustainable rehabilitation of the Valle Grande Protected Natural Landscape is included in the ‘Fort by Nature’ program of the Tourism Sustainability Plan for Destinations, and has a budget of more than 255,000 euros, within the framework of the Spanish Government’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan financed by the European Union (Next Generation EU Funds).

The project is being carried out through an order from the Cabildo (Cabildo) to Gesplan (Gestión y Planeamiento Territorial y Medioambiental) and will have an extendable execution period of half a year.

The main objective of this action is to preserve and enhance the natural environment of Valle Grande through traditional landscape restoration techniques, focused on the rehabilitation of stone walls and traditional agricultural systems such as gavias, fundamental elements of the landscape and rural identity of Fuerteventura.

In addition to preserving the natural heritage, these interventions will make it possible to restore conditions that favor water retention and the maintenance of local biodiversity.

Among the planned actions are the cleaning and repair of stone walls, the restoration of gullies to collect rainwater, the recovery of the landscape using sustainable techniques, and the elimination of elements that are alien to the natural environment.
