In a firm commitment to the values of equality, respect and social cohesion, the City Council of Puerto del Rosario has signed, on Monday July 14, a collaboration agreement with the Association ALTIHAY Fuerteventura, LGTBI+ Collective, for the implementation of the project “Puerto Diverso 2024”. The initiative seeks to advance in the construction of a more inclusive, plural and free of discrimination municipality.
The main objective of the project is to raise public awareness about the reality of LGTBI+ people, making visible the affective-sexual, family and gender identity diversity, and actively contributing to the eradication of stigmas, hate speech and harassment situations that still persist in different social environments.
During the signing of the agreement, the Mayor of Puerto del Rosario, David de Vera, expressed that “from the City Council we understand that a democratic society cannot be built without guaranteeing the dignity and rights of all people. This project represents a step forward in our institutional work to promote real and effective equality”.
For her part, the Councilor for Equality, LGTBI and Diversity, Tacoremi Gutiérrez, stressed that “Puerto Diverso 2024 is born with the vocation to create safe, creative and transformative spaces. We are committed to initiatives that make diversity visible and empower the LGTBI+ population, especially in contexts where cultural and social barriers still exist”.
Lines of action of the project
Among the main lines of action of “Puerto Diverso 2024” are:
- The visibility of LGTBI+ families, as part of the social fabric of the municipality, through actions that promote their representation in educational, cultural and community environments.
- The promotion of inclusive leisure culture, through artistic and creative activities that encourage the active participation of LGTBI+ people in public spaces and cultural centers.
- The defense of freedom of sexual and gender expression, through awareness campaigns aimed at combating LGTBI-phobia, social rejection and hate crimes in the local environment.
- Prevention and self-care in sexual health, with special emphasis on the detection and reduction of sexually transmitted infections, such as HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C or Syphilis, among others.
- The promotion of healthy lifestyle habits and emotional well-being, generating dynamics that improve the self-esteem and personal development of the LGTBI+ population in Puerto del Rosario.
The agreement signed will allow to deploy during the coming months a diverse and transversal programming, involving both the LGTBI+ community and the citizens as a whole, contributing to a model of coexistence based on respect, equity and human rights.
