A quad was caught illegally accessing this protected area, where vehicle traffic is strictly prohibited because it is an area of high ecological value. This unique enclave, made up of rhodoliths -small calcareous algae that simulate popcorn-, is extremely fragile: every step is an impact, and even more, the passage of wheels like those of this vehicle.
Thanks to a video sent by an anonymous person, the UMA Unit acted quickly, locating and intercepting the offender in a matter of hours. The intervention prevented further damage and demonstrated the effectiveness of cooperation between citizens and law enforcement agencies.
The mayor of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco, wanted to congratulate “the agents of the UMA Unit for their quick and effective response to this serious breach” and thanked the public for their collaboration: “The protection of our environment is not only an institutional task. We need a vigilant and committed citizenship, and this case is a clear example of how together we can stop the aggressions to the landscape and the natural heritage that defines us”.
For his part, the councilman of Environment, David Fajardo, wanted to highlight the specific work done by this specialized unit: “The UMA Unit was born to respond to the environmental challenges of a municipality with a natural environment as extensive and delicate as ours. This operation demonstrates that its presence is fundamental.” “In addition, we deeply thank the person who recorded and reported the incident. Citizen collaboration, coupled with the technical and rigorous work of our agents, is our best tool to protect such sensitive spaces as Playa del Mejillón.”
The City Council reminds the population that unauthorized access to protected natural areas is a serious infraction and can lead to significant penalties. It also appeals to continue using the official channels to report this type of behavior and contribute to the defense of the natural environment of the municipality.
Taking care of La Oliva is a task for everyone. Nature is not stepped on: it is respected.
