The City Council of Puerto del Rosario celebrates the final authorization of the expansion project of the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) of the municipality, an infrastructure promoted by the Directorate General of Water of the Government of the Canary Islands, in coordination with the Island Water Council of Fuerteventura (CIAF) and under the collaboration agreement with the State.

The project will double the current treatment capacity, adding 3,000 cubic meters per day to reach a total of 6,000 m³/day, through the incorporation of new treatment lines. The project is designed with a view to the future, contemplating spaces for subsequent expansions up to 2030.

The City Council has actively contributed to the success of this initiative by ceding the necessary land and expediting all urban planning procedures to facilitate its prompt execution.

“This sewage treatment plant is an essential infrastructure for Puerto del Rosario,” said Mayor David de Vera. “It allows us to solve a technical bottleneck that was limiting the residential and social development of the municipality. From the City Council we have acted responsibly, offering the land and guaranteeing institutional collaboration to make this strategic project a reality. The citizenship cannot wait any longer, and today we can say that we are on the right path.”

The project will have a direct impact on the urban development of the municipality, allowing the unblocking of new housing developments, such as the 76 subsidized housing units in Rosavila, already authorized, and more than 500 housing units projected in the area of the Los Pozos partial plan, as well as the construction of new public facilities and endowments.

The councilman of Municipal Services, David de León, stressed that “this is an example of how technical planning and coordinated work between administrations generates real results for the neighbors. This treatment plant not only improves the quality of sanitation, but also opens the door to the comprehensive modernization of the municipality’s water system, something we have been waiting for years”.

For her part, the Councilor of Works, Planning and Urbanism, Ana Hernández, added that “the growth of Puerto del Rosario must be orderly, safe and sustainable. And that is only possible if we have updated infrastructures. From the area of Planning and Urbanism we are promoting all urban and endowment projects that depend on this action so that there are no more unnecessary delays”.

The project, recently approved by the General Meeting of the Insular Water Council, is part of the objectives of the Fuerteventura Hydrological Plan, whose fourth cycle (2027-2033) has just started. It is aligned with the policies of water reuse, energy efficiency improvement and adaptation to the future needs of the population.
